Manchester Airport, fire detection system

Manchester Airport

Manchester Airport have seen a significant reduction in the unwanted alarms due to equipment failure and associated costs involved with unnecessary evacuation and disruption of the airport complex.

Overview

Protec Fire Detection plc was employed by Manchester Airport Group (MAG) in Sept 2007 to conduct and produce a technical appraisal of the fire detection system installed within the Manchester airport complex. This document provided comprehensive technical details on the existing system installed and identified any non-compliances associated with the current configuration. Protec Fire Detection PLC provided proposals on how to rectify and improve the fire detection system to provide a more reliable and workable life safety system.

Protec Fire Detection PLC were subsequently employed by MAG to replace and enhance the old conventional and obsolete analogue addressable systems identified within the technical appraisal with the latest fire detection digital and TCP/IP networking technology, which would then be supported by a 5 year comprehensive maintenance contract.

Maintenance

Protec Fire Detection PLC commenced a 5 year partnership with MAG in 2008 to provide a comprehensive maintenance package. A dedicated team of electrical / electronic qualified and experienced fire detection management and engineering infrastructure was implemented to ensure that the fire detection and associated systems were correctly maintained in accordance with the EN/BS5839-1 recommendations.

Benefits

Since the implementation of the enhanced digital fire detection system, MAG have seen a significant reduction in the unwanted alarms due to equipment failure and associated costs involved with unnecessary evacuation and disruption of the airport complex. The comprehensive Protec maintenance contract has ensured that MAG remains fully compliant with the requirements of the BS5839-1:2013. Additional benefits are the direct access to Protec electronic maintenance records and KPI results. These enhanced electronic records ensure that MAG have the ability to check and confirm test dates of every device on the fire detection system and view the relevant service certificates.
